HTC Vive's Focus Vision is a 999 stab at high-end VR and mixed reality
HTC Vive is following up its intriguing, yet expensive, XR Elite headset with something that's still quite pricey, the 999 Focus Vision. Built on the same platform as the standalone Vive Focus 3, the upgraded model adds a slew of new features like built-in eye tracking, 16MP stereo color front-facing cameras for mixed reality and automatic IPD adjustment (which makes it easier to share). And with the additional 149 DisplayPort wired streaming kit, gamers can also hook the Focus Vision up to their PCs for more intensive VR experiences. But that's to be expected. While Meta has poured tens of billions into making its Quest headsets cheaper and more accessible, without any need to worry about profitability, HTC Vive has leaned towards making more expensive headsets better suited for business and government work.

How to unlock your phone with facial recognition even when you have your glasses on
Face ID utilizes facial recognition technology to scan your face and verify your identity. When activated, the feature uses the front-facing camera, or selfie cam, to securely authenticate you are the owner of the iPhone. During the pandemic, Face ID received a lot of scrutiny for not functioning correctly, and it simply did not work whenever you were wearing your mask and attempted to unlock your iPhone. Before that realization, I'm sure you also noticed Face ID was much slower at unlocking your device when compared to its predecessor, Touch ID. Implementing this innovative and seemingly secure way of unlocking your precious iPhone was nothing short of a disaster.

Amazon's Echo Show 5 is the perfect accessory for your desk
You can choose from a variety of customizable clock faces to match your home's décor. Amazon's Echo Show 5 may be small, but it's loaded with many of the same features as bigger and more expensive models like the 2nd-generation Echo Show and Echo Show 8. The Echo Show 5 is great for tight spaces like desks, nightstands, and other books of the home. It comes with a front-facing camera so you can video chat with friends and family. The screen is bright and the resolution, while lower than other small smart displays, is pretty sharp given its petite size.

Samsung introduces SelfieType, an AI-powered virtual keyboard
Electronics giant Samsung recently announced that it would showcase five innovative projects from its C-Lab Inside program, in addition to exciting products from four start-ups in its C-Lab Outside program at CES 2020, the world's largest tech exhibition. One of the projects that Samsung has chosen to highlight is extremely cool--SelfieType, a software that allows the user to turn an empty surface (like a tabletop) into a virtual keyboard, using artificial intelligence to track your finger movements. It also makes use of your front-facing camera, which isn't just for snapping the hottest selfies (and wefies!). The way we work is a changing landscape. In an age of flexible work hours, work-from-home set-ups, freelance or contracted work, and the ever-increasing number of digital nomads, doing your nine-to-five has taken on a very different meaning.

Microsoft HoloLens retro review: What made it great, and what a new HoloLens needs to succeed
Unearthing Microsoft's HoloLens feels a little like walking the decks of the Titanic. Three years ago, Microsoft's augmented-reality headset ignited the imaginations of consumers and developers alike with its promise of lifelike animated sprites that could perch on real-world objects. It's almost criminal that Microsoft's original HoloLens demos never saw the light of day. Bending down to peer "inside" a coffee table into the Minecraft underworld was an utterly transformative experience. But at least Microsoft's vision of using the HoloLens as a business tool apparently is alive and well. Because Microsoft never sold its device to consumers, PCWorld never formally reviewed it.
LG's G8 will fight FaceID with its own 3D front-facing camera
LG isn't ready to show off all of the details around its next flagship phone just yet, but tonight it has revealed the technology we'll see in the G8 ThinQ's front-facing camera. By including a "Time of Flight" image sensor made by Infineon, LG claims it can deliver features like facial recognition, augmented reality and better selfies in all kinds of lighting conditions while using less power than other solutions like Apple's FaceID. While Apple's TrueDepth technology for FaceID is similar to what we saw in the Xbox 360 Kinect where it projects thousands of laser dots then measures the distortion to figure out where things are, Time of Flight is the tech Microsoft hoped it would get better results from for the Xbox One Kinect device. By capturing IR light as it reflects off of a subject, the idea is that it will give more accurate results with less computing power. There have been rumors that Apple is considering implementing it in the iPhone's rear-facing camera, however well-sourced analyst Ming-Chi Kuo shot those down, saying the device's existing dual-camera setup would suffice.

Lunar New Year Google Doodle uses AI, front-facing camera to teach shadow puppetry
The traditional Chinese calendar, which incorporates 12 zodiac animals, leverages moon cycles to mark the new year. In 2019, this date falls on February 5th and begins the Year of the Pig. To celebrate, Tuesday's Google Doodle incorporates an AI Experiment that novelly uses your device's front-facing camera to teach shadow puppetry. Chinese shadow puppetry is an ancient art form for storytelling that uses silhouette figures and music to pass down cultural history. Cut-out paper or hand figures are placed in front of a light source and projected on a translucent screen.
